78 Days

Back in March I went wedding dress shopping with my mom. I honestly did not think that we would find anything right away, and figured that dress shopping would be a time consuming, multi day experience. I love shopping, but I'm horrible at it. If I can't find something easily, I tend to get frustrated. Not a good trait to have when shopping for wedding dresses.

So since I have decided that I do not want to show my dress until after the wedding, I am going to post some tips and what to expect for brides going on their first wedding dress shopping excursion. I went to my local Davids Bridal, I did not have an appointment, and they took me back right away, however, if you are planning to go at night, or on a weekend, I would highly recommend making an appointment.

After they took my information (name, number of bridesmaids, wedding date, etc.) they asked me to look through their look book and fold down a few photos of dresses that I liked. I found two that I liked and could imagine myself in.

After that, my consultant, who was very helpful, asked me to grab some sample dress shoes (I didn't think to bring my own - you might want to!) and I followed her into a dressing room. She asked me to remove my shoes and socks and take of my pants and shirt. So, I'm standing there in my strapless bra (which I was proud that I thought to wear - ends up I didn't need it) and underwear with "Go Pink" written all over them! ... Maybe wear some underwear you wouldn't mind being seen in public in - I would not recommend a thong - granny panties are the way to go on your shopping day!
Yup... just like this! ;)

After I stripped off my clothes and am standing in the dressing room feeling rather embarrassed in my bra and undies with a perfect stranger, she pulls out a bra and tells me to take my own off! I was not prepared for that!! I did theatre for 12 years, and am pretty comfortable changing in front of people, and I have never been more embarrassed! (I even walked in on my high school principal in his underwear while he was changing once! In theatre, it just happens!)

Then after changing into their bra with tummy tucking powers, everything went smoothly .... I tried on the dresses with her help, and she just kept bringing dresses to me, and she was very knowledgeable. The first two dresses I didn't like, so she asked why I didn't like them and I told her why -- this is where you need to be honest, if you don't tell your consultant what you like and what you don't like then they wont know what dresses to pull for you! -- so when she brought the third dress, I was feeling pretty confident that she understood what I was looking for in my ideal dress.

Well, you know what they say, the third times the charm! I tried the third dress on, and my consultant instantly knew it was the one, you could see it in her eyes! Then, when I walked out, another mother of the bride waiting on her daughter to change, leaned over to my mom and said, "That dress is her! It's the one!" I guess my face gave it away! I knew this was my dress!

She had pulled one more dress for me so I tried that on, just to make sure, but I knew as soon as I tried it on that I had already found my dress!

I hope you all find the dress of your dreams!

So, I hope my shopping experience helps you. I know that it was a little uncomfortable at first, but I can honestly say that, even though I was not looking forward to dress shopping, I am so glad that I had such a great experience.

What was your shopping experience like? Any other tips for future dress shoppers?
